Google Gemini NotebookLM for marketers
NotebookLM is your AI research buddy, helping you organise ideas, break down complex topics and key insights, and create content effortlessly. Powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro, it simplifies research by summarising info, explaining concepts, and sharpening your thoughts.no
If you’re unfamiliar with NotebookLM, here’s a quick overview and reasons why it can be an invaluable tool for your brand.
Say you’re researching a subject that’s relevant to your brand right now, something topical like - ‘How do brands stay relevant in the global rise of AI?’. NotebookLM allows you to take reference material - be it a Ted Talk, a white paper, your lecture notes or a great article you read online. You can load all of this rich source material into NotebookLM and it will instantly become your AI research assistant. You can ask questions, to summarise and pick out key points across the source material. It’s a mindblowing way to learn faster, organise your knowledge or use it to generate new ideas.
The really cool shit is what you can do once you’ve established this knowledge base.
Ask it to create content and strategy - generate ideas for campaign concepts, and topical subjects for social media and blog posts. Summarise industry trends and reports, inform customer insights or competitor analysis to inform strategies.
Use it to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and improve customer engagement. Key use cases might include:
Content creation: Ask it to summarise research, generate topical ideas, and draft marketing materials.
Customer insights: Analyse feedback to identify trends and improve customer experience.
Knowledge management: Organise internal documents, and train it to understand your brand-specific materials, such as marketing guidelines or training manuals, to provide instant answers to team members.
Product development: Streamline R&D by extracting relevant insights from technical documentation or research papers to inform product development.
Team collaboration: summarise meetings, track projects, and align teams efficiently.
Employee training: Simplify onboarding with summarised training and HR materials and instant FAQs.
Market research: Analyse industry trends, market research reports and competitor analysis. Extract useful audience insights for strategic decision-making.
Personalised engagement: Enhance customer support by providing quicker responses to customer queries by leveraging AI-trained materials. Analyse customer preferences to create more personalised campaigns.
Here is an overview of the features and how to get started…
The interface is really simple and easy to use. To get started you first need to add some reference sources.
Adding sources is easy, you can add audio, and video, PDFs, paste in text and URLs or connect to your Google Docs and Slides, it takes up to 300 sources so even the most in-depth research projects can be handled easily. The downside is that images are not accepted and LinkedIn posts won’t work.
As soon as you start to load in your sources, it begins to learn from the content and will summarise the content into a short paragraph.
Now it’s all in there, you can begin by asking it questions, and it also poses suggested questions for you to ask.
This is really cool - like many other AI tools, its response is displayed below your question, but NotebookLM annotates the text so you can see directly what the source material is. Allowing you to cross-reference the context of the original quote and ensure it’s being used correctly.
Over on the right-hand side of the interface is a tile called Studio, in here you can do something quite amazing - NotebookLM will take what you have done and generate it into a spoken conversation between two AI voices and play it back to you in a podcast-style - the virtual hosts joke and banter between themselves about the content, quoting from the content and discussing it, it feels credible, if not a little corny in places, but it’s a novel way to take in the content, especially if you are on the move.

You can even ask it to create a presentation summarising the research. This helps to create a quick framework for your slides, but me personally, I'd always want to go into it and refine it.
Conclusion
Google Gemini's NotebookLM could be a game-changer for marketers. It makes research a breeze, helps you stay on top of trends, and sparks new ideas without the stress. Whether you’re creating content, analysing customer insights, or just trying to organise your thoughts, NotebookLM has your back. It's like having an AI-powered research assistant that can do everything from drafting campaigns to summarising industry reports. So, if you’re looking to save time, boost your creativity, and streamline your workflows, this tool is definitely worth checking out.
