Home working doesn’t mean lone working: supporting mental health in the creative industry

Remote work boosts flexibility and wellbeing, but it doesn’t mean going it alone. At Threerooms, we keep creativity and connection alive. Read on.

Remote working in a creative agency

Remote work has a lot going for it – especially when it comes to mental health. For one, the flexibility is a game changer. No more stressful commutes, rushing to catch a train, or sitting in traffic. Instead, you can use that extra time to fit in a morning walk, have a proper breakfast, or even throw in a load of laundry between meetings. Plus, when life happens – like needing to let the plumber in or picking up a package – you don’t have to worry about the logistics. Working from home offers the kind of work-life balance that was hard to imagine a few years ago, and that balance can really help reduce stress.

But while remote work can support better mental wellbeing, it’s not without its challenges. When you’re at home all day, it’s easy to start feeling isolated. You miss those spontaneous office chats, the quick brainstorms, or just having someone to grab a coffee with. In the creative industry, these moments are crucial – we thrive on bouncing ideas off each other and exploring creativity together. That’s why it’s so important to build virtual spaces where our team can connect, brainstorm and spark new ideas, even remotely.

Keeping remote teams connected and creative

At Threerooms, we were one of the early movers to remote working, letting our offices go during the first COVID lockdown. It’s been an overwhelmingly positive move, but we’ve learned a thing or two about making it work along the way. Creativity doesn’t happen in a vacuum – it needs collaboration and shared inspiration. So our goal has always been to ensure that home working doesn’t feel like lone working. Here’s how we do it:

✅ Bi-weekly check-ins: Every Monday morning, we start the week with a team catch-up. It’s a chance to chat about what we all did over the weekend and run through what everyone will be working on over the next week. Then, on Wednesday, we have a shorter meet, usually to do a micro-learning session together or just to say a mid-week hi. These check-ins help us stay connected and feel like we’re part of a team, even when we’re miles apart.

✅ Flexible working: Life happens, and remote work gives us the flexibility to handle it. We encourage everyone on our team to set their own hours, take breaks when needed, and balance work with life. Whether it's picking up the kids or making time for a personal project, we trust our team to do what works best for them. This approach has been key to reducing stress and improving wellbeing.

✅ The right tools: Productive and Miro are key to keeping our creative processes collaborative. Productive helps us manage projects and stay aligned, so we can focus on creativity without missing a beat. And Miro is our digital whiteboard, perfect for brainstorming and interactive workshops, allowing us to explore ideas together in real time, just as we would in person. These tools ensure remote work doesn’t limit our creativity or teamwork.

✅ Virtual hangouts and banter spaces: Google Workspace is our go-to for staying in touch, and we’ve set up some fun, non-work spaces too. From ‘Shooting Shit’ (yes, that’s the name!) for banter and memes, to our virtual ‘Water Cooler’ for those quick, casual chats, we’ve recreated some of that office energy online.

✅ Ongoing support and growth: We’re big believers in investing in our team’s development. Whether it’s signing up for a cool workshop or attending a conference, we offer opportunities for our team to grow and learn. It’s not just good for business – it’s good for mental health too. Feeling like you’re constantly evolving can boost confidence and motivation.

✅ In-person meetups: While we love remote work, we also recognise the value of face-to-face time. That’s why we have quarterly training days where the whole team gets together for learning, collaboration, and, of course, some socialising (pub time included!).

All of this doesn’t just help us feel connected and inspired while we work remotely, but it also positively impacts the way we serve our clients. After all, happy, connected teams are more creative and productive. And that’s what we’re all about – helping brands connect with people in meaningful ways. Whether it’s through smart branding strategies, digital experiences, or creative campaigns, our remote setup allows us to tap into the best of our team’s talents, no matter where they’re based.

Shaping a healthier future for creative professionals during home working

The creative industry has embraced remote work in a big way, but as we move forward, agencies need to keep mental health front and centre. It’s not enough to hand people a laptop and a meeting link and hope for the best. We need to create environments where remote workers feel just as supported as they would in an office – if not more.

At Threerooms, we’ve learned that keeping the remote team spirit alive is about fostering genuine connections, encouraging open communication, and providing flexible support that meets everyone’s needs.

So, whether you’re a fully remote agency like us or just starting to explore flexible working, remember: home working doesn’t have to mean lone working. Together, we can create a future of work where creativity and well being go hand in hand.
